The Laimburg Research Centre for Agriculture and Forestry is a leading institution in the agricultural sector of South Tyrol. The primary task of the Laimburg Research Centre involves research and development with the aim of improving the competitiveness and sustainability of agriculture in South Tyrol.

Agriculture in balance with environment and society
The Laimburg Research Centre runs basic research and applied research into all aspects of domestic agriculture. Great emphasis is placed on practical aspects of research to drive forward innovations in the agricultural sector.
Sustainability and ecological awareness are core values that guide the work of the Research Centre in Laimburg. The aim is to have an agricultural sector that is in balance with the environment and with society.

International research network
For its work, the Laimburg Research Centre has access to multi-faceted forms of cooperation as well as contacts to research institutions and universities at national and international level. At a local level, the Laimburg Research Centre works closely with the agricultural school, the Free University of Bolzano and other consultancy and research institutions in South Tyrol .

Research work at the Laimburg Research Center
Founded in 1975, about 200 staff now work in the four offices of the Laimburg Research Centre, sub-divided into eight sections (fruit growing, viticulture, (wine) cellar business, plant conservation, mountain land management, special cultures, molecular biology, foodstuff quality) and 33 specialist areas. On an annual basis, about 350 research and test projects are conducted in all areas of South Tyrol agriculture, from fruit-growing and viticulture and out to mountain land management. 
In fruit-growing alone, approximately 90 projects and activities are in progress of which one third relates to pomology.

The Laimburg Estate Management body and agricultural businesses
Throughout the region, 22 agricultural businesses belong to Laimburg Research Centre, all run by the Laimburg Estate Management body. The estate management body also has its own wine cellar business, a large regional vineyard, a horticulture business, the regional 'Passirio' fish farm and the 'Gardens of Trautmannsdorff Castle'.
